We took a guided walk with the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust

Last week, we stepped away from our desks and into the heart of a woodland sponsored by Wyevale, joining the Herefordshire Woodland Trust for a guided walk.

It was a chance to uncover the hidden work behind woodland creation, upkeep, and future-proofing. The painstaking efforts that go into transforming a green space into a lasting Heritage Woodland.

A pocket of paradise

This particular pocket of paradise is more than just a beautiful walk for families and dog walkers. It’s a haven for countless bird and insect species and even serves as a memorial garden for those who have passed.

The woodland, now a hundred years old, was likely stripped for timber during the war and then purposefully replanted, creating a rich tapestry of trees of varying ages and remarkable specimens, even once used for grazing.

Perfect vantage points

Our guide from the Trust shared fascinating insights into the reasons behind specific tree choices and why some dead Ash trees are left standing.

Far from being a hazard, these tall trunks serve a dual purpose – they provide nesting sites for birds like Woodpeckers while also acting as prime roosting spots for raptors, giving them a perfect vantage point.

A short walk but a lasting reminder

A short walk packed with insights and a fresh reminder of the critical role that woodlands play in biodiversity, conservation, and community.
