Meet our Wyevale Nurseries Scholarship winner Daryl Young
Daryl Young, a student at CAFRE (College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise) in Northern Ireland, was awarded our Wyevale Nurseries Scholarship through the Colegrave Seabrook Foundation last year.
Daryl’s journey in horticulture began in 2013, working as a labourer for a hard landscaping company before gaining experience in garden maintenance and running a small private production nursery.

Passion for plants
His passion for plants and the outdoors stems from childhood, helping in his grandparents’ garden and developing a deep appreciation for the natural world.
In 2020, Daryl enrolled at CAFRE Greenmount and completed his Level 3 ATED in Horticulture.
He is now in the first year of his Foundation Degree in Horticulture, aiming to expand his knowledge and practical skills while earning an internationally recognised qualification.
Sustainable horticulture
Looking ahead, Daryl plans to grow his garden maintenance business and establish his own private nursery, focusing on hardy nursery stock and native and ornamental trees.
His vision includes reducing the carbon footprint associated with importing plants and promoting sustainable horticultural practices.
Great feeling
On receiving the scholarship, Daryl said: “I am very fortunate and extremely grateful to be awarded this scholarship. It will help me continue my studies and cover some travel costs.
“To be awarded one from Wyevale Nurseries, who are among the very best nurseries in the UK, is a great feeling. I look forward to visiting and learning more about their business.”
Our Wyevale Nurseries Scholarship, launched in partnership with the Colegrave Seabrook Foundation, supports students passionate about nursery stock production and horticulture. We are proud to encourage young talent and help shape the future of our industry.
