How to plant a bareroot hedge
Free expert advice on how to plant a bareroot hedge
We’re offering free expert advice on how to successfully plant a bareroot hedge this autumn to help raise awareness about how environmentally friendly bareroot hedging is (October 2025).
Bareroot benefits
We’ve put together step-by-step instructions just ahead of the start of our lifting season in November to help promote the benefits of bareroot.
Kersten, our Sales Director, explains: “For anyone planning on planting a hedge this autumn and winter, bareroot is the greener, smarter choice – it’s sustainable and cost-effective and it produces a high-quality green boundary that provides shelter and food for a vast number of our native birds, insects and animals.

Eco-friendly
“As a leader in British horticulture, we’ve long been at the forefront of supplying bareroot hedging stock to commercial and amenity customers for many years. Our bareroot hedging plants are grown in open fields and lifted during dormancy, typically between November and March, making them eco-friendly – no plastic pots or peat/manmade mediums required.
Hardy and resilient
“They are also more economically friendly as they have lower production and shipping costs, which is good for the environment too, and they are hardy and resilient, as they are grown outdoors and are well-adapted to current UK conditions.
“These plants are ideal for creating natural boundaries, wildlife corridors and privacy screens, whether in domestic gardens or large-scale landscaping projects.”

Sustainable
We’ve been growing trees, hedging, forestry and other hardy plants utilising innovative approaches to production and sustainability for 95 years.
Our bareroot lifting season starts at the beginning of November and we supply amenity and garden centre customers with bareroot hedging from now through until the spring thanks to our state-of-the-art 3,000 cubic metre cold store.
Biodiversity
Kersten adds: “Hedging plays a huge role in structure, biodiversity, even bird migration and we want to raise more awareness of this and how important planting bareroot at this time of year is.
“We’ve created a new booklet that’s designed to support confident, informed decisions for anyone in our industry, beyond our existing customers, and is for those exploring how to use hedging more intentionally in their work and gardens. It’s not a sales tool but a guide for those wanting to find out what varieties are good to use when, where and why, and to give tips on how to plant well.
Our handy guide
“It’s something you can keep open on your desk, on-site or in the garden shed, folded back on itself, covered in soil, and used without worrying about damaging it. We’re more than happy for everyone – from landscape designers, amenity companies and garden centres, through to individual gardeners – to access and use it.”
