Adrian’s bird survey
Our spring bird survey
Earlier this year, an amazing 1.9 million birds were recorded in the 2024 RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch.
Birds are so vital to us gardeners, and bird watching can encourage positive wellbeing and mental health.
Here at Wyevale, our Garden Design and Domestic Landscape Sales Manager, Adrian Hoare recently completed his bi-annual survey of the birds on our nursery.
Four of the top five
Adrian recorded four of the nation’s top five: House Sparrow, Blue Tit, Blackbird and Wood Pigeon. As well as some interesting water lovers visiting this year, including the Moorhen, Coot, Canada Goose, Cormorant and Tufted Duck.
He also saw some more usual birds when compared to the RSPB’s results for Herefordshire. These included, to name just a few, the Black-Headed Gull, Chiffchaff and Treecreeper.
Standout Species
Adrian explains:
“My standout species were Marsh Tit, Water Rail, Black Redstart, Reed Bunting and Goosander. My favourite was the Goosander. Not especially unusual in its typical habitat of upland reservoir but a rare sight to see flying over our nursery.”
“Our proximity to Stretton Pools probably explains this and the Cormorant. There was also a Redwing who has seemingly forgotten to fly back to Scandinavia for the summer!”
Environmental Management
In total, Adrian recorded a healthy 44 species of wild bird onsite. A clear indicator that we are managing our environment well.
