Original Select: Growing the future of native trees

As environmental pressures, climate change and urbanisation reshape the British landscape, the need for resilient, reliable native trees has never been greater.

Nearly a century of horticultural expertise here on our nursery has led to the creation of Original Select, a specialist range of improved native cultivars chosen for their strength, structure and performance in challenging modern conditions.

The Original Select range has been carefully developed by our experienced tree production team.

Exceptional parent stock

Each cultivar has been extensively trialled, selected from exceptional parent stock and grown to preserve the defining characteristics of Britain’s much loved native species.

What sets the Original Select trees apart is not radical reinvention, but thoughtful refinement – ensuring successful establishment, uniform appearance and long term resilience in both rural and urban plantings.

Landscape challenges

This collection tackles one of today’s biggest landscape challenges: the declining performance of traditional seedling forms under increasingly unpredictable growing conditions.

Original Select

By selecting for improved health, structure and consistency, the Original Select cultivars help safeguard the ecological and cultural value of native trees for future generations.

Among the stand out cultivars is Betula pendula ‘Select’, chosen for its upright, pyramidal form, clean white bark and narrow canopy, ideal for confined or urban spaces. Its drought tolerance and strong central leader make it especially reliable.

Prunus padus ‘Select’ features deeper green leaves with higher chlorophyll levels, enhancing carbon fixation and proving valuable in demanding sites.

And Quercus robur ‘Select’, grafted onto seed raised rootstocks for enhanced vigour, provides the iconic structure and wildlife value of English oak with improved uniformity, even thriving in open urban landscapes.

John explains:

Thoughtfully improved yet proudly native, the Original Select range represents a greener, stronger and more resilient future for Britain’s treescapes.
