Five native hedging varieties loved by birds & pollinators
A thoughtfully chosen native hedge can provide food, shelter and nesting opportunities for birds, while also supporting bees, butterflies and other important pollinators throughout the year.
We champion British-grown native species that help boost biodiversity and create thriving wildlife habitats.
Here are five of our favourite native hedge species for attracting and supporting wildlife.
Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna)

Often considered the backbone of traditional British hedgerows, hawthorn produces masses of white blossom in spring, providing an important source of nectar for pollinating insects. Later in the year, its bright red haws offer valuable food for birds including thrushes and finches. It also creates dense, thorny cover that is ideal for nesting birds.
Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa)

One of the earliest flowering native shrubs, blackthorn bursts into bloom before its leaves emerge, offering an early food source for bees. In autumn, it produces sloes which are enjoyed by wildlife and make a wonderful addition to mixed native hedges. Its thorny structure provides excellent protection for nesting birds.
Hazel (Corylus avellana)

Hazel is a naturally bushy hedge plant that adds structure and year-round interest. Its catkins provide an early source of pollen, while the nuts support a range of wildlife. As part of a mixed hedge, hazel creates valuable shelter and habitat for birds and small mammals.
Dog Rose (Rosa canina)

Dog Rose brings beauty and biodiversity together. Its delicate summer flowers attract pollinating insects, while its rose hips provide an important winter food source for birds. It works particularly well when woven through mixed native hedgerows.
Goat Willow (Salix caprea)

A true wildlife hero, Goat Willow produces its distinctive fluffy catkins in early spring. These are among the earliest and most valuable sources of nectar and pollen for bees emerging after winter. It is an excellent choice where boosting pollinator numbers is a priority.
Plant for wildlife success
The most wildlife-friendly hedges combine several native species to provide food, shelter and seasonal interest throughout the year. Mixed native hedging creates valuable wildlife corridors and supports a wider variety of birds, pollinators and other beneficial species. Our extensive range of British-grown native hedging plants can help landscapers, growers and landowners create greener, more biodiverse spaces for generations to come.
